Tongue Diagnosis

Tongue diagnosis is an integral part of taking a medical history in Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine practitioners believe the appearance of your tongue can reveal a lot about your health. Different areas of the tongue are believed to reflect the state of the different organ systems. If there is an unusual color, coating, and/or shape in a certain area, special attention is paid to the corresponding organ system.

In Chinese medicine, disease is explained by an imbalance of yin and yang and heat and cold in the human body. Chinese medicine believes that chronic imbalances will have a definite impact on the color and shape of the tongue body and the color and thickness of the tongue coating.

A normal tongue is described as light red in color with a thin white coating. The tongue should not be too wet and not too dry. The tongue should be without cracks or movement. It should not be too long or too short nor too stiff or too flaccid.

Tongue body color reflects the health of the internal organs. When the tongue changes from the normal pale red to very pale, dark red, purple or blue it is a clear picture of pathological changes in the body. Changes in the shape of the tongue body will indicate the severity or duration of the condition. Tongue coating can change quickly and will be a clear indication whether or not the nature of the disease is one of excess or deficiency.

Tongue diagnosis is an important part of the Chinese medical assessment, but as with any assessment method, the doctor does not rely on tongue diagnosis alone, but uses it as part to provide a complete picture of a person’s health

When the wisdom of Chinese medicine meets the technological advances of western medicine, we will all benefit.

Bulimics and anorexics are extreme perfectionists and are not happy with their appearance. They are terrified of what might happen to their bodies if they stop their practice, they feel it is out of their control to discontinue their habit. Bulimics believe they are too smart to be caught. They are the chameleons of the nutrition world, as they appear to be like all of us, but in fact are very different.

Bulimics and anorexics need isolation to carry out their starving, binging and purging, as it is not a socially accepted activity. Those that are affected most by bulimia or anorexia are individuals in a situation, which is dependent on looking good which includes actors, models, dancers and sometimes high profile public personalities and teenagers.

To break these habits it is important to support the individual with encouragement and an environment of supervision, creating self confidence and acceptance.

Ayurvedic Nutrition

Colorful healthy meal on white plate

In the ancient medical system of India we find use of the oldest and most time-tested approaches to nutrition. Its science of food and diet is an integral part of philosophy of man, of his consciousness and of his relationship to the universe. The result is an approach to diet that is unsurpassed both in its profundity and sophistication as well as in its practicality and simplicity. Here the selection and preparation of food is seen as inseparable from the treatment of disease and the cultivation of vibrant health.

Through its long history, it would appear that Ayurveda witnessed the rise and fall of many schools of therapy ranging from herbal medicine to physical therapy and massage, surgery, psychiatry, the use of medication, mantra and many other treatment modalities. Each of these were integrated into physicians practice, and the conceptual scheme expanded to accommodate them. As a result the school of Ayurveda has a breadth and a depth that could be unparalleled in the history of medical science.

This also made it possible for the Ayurvedic physician to develop, over thousands of years, an extremely complex and complete science of herbology and pharmacology. The science of nutrition is vast and comprehensive and is not separated from pharmacology and no distinction is made between foods and drugs, herbal and mineral substances.

The world of nature and the predominance of wild fruits, vegetables, herbs and game provided the Ayurvedic physicians with a rich store of foods having a wide variety of very specific effects. Our western analytical science of nutrition may have attained greater precision at the expense of a decline and loss of appreciation of the richness and versatility  of natural resources, both in the world of foods and in the world of human physiology.
