Menopause and Night Sweats

dreamstime_m_13766791

Waking up during the night and experiencing excessive sweating is not uncommon. If the sleeping quarters are too warm and heavy covers and clothing are used in addition, overheating is easily explained.

But – night-sweats can also be caused by a variety of other conditions such as menopause, infections, medication and fevers.

Menopausal night sweats or hot flashes are due to changes in hormones, ending the female cycles of fertility. It may manifest in the form of feeling flushed or redness of the face, the neck, the ears, the chest, the extremities or all over the body.

Stress can be a factor and hot flashes can be associated with diet, lifestyle and physical activity. Eating hot, spicy foods or consuming alcohol may have a similar effect and sensitivities can develop at any point in a person’s life.

Mental Stamina

During a life-time we face many challenges. How we react and meet these adversities may say a lot about our mental strength. How well we are able to deal with job loss, marriage break-up, financial set-backs and disappointments in general is a measure of emotional stability and stamina.Mentally strong people are able to see new opportunities instead of defeat, overcome adversities by making though decisions to achieve positive results

Mental endurance and strength is a matter of emotional intelligence and maturity and taking responsibility for situations and their actions.

Emotional intelligence is the ability to navigate through social complexities, it increases self awareness and prevents self sabotage of personal growth and future goals.

.

Emotionally intelligent people place high value on their relationships, they treat everyone with respect, display a positive outlook and are willing to lend a helping hand.

They focus on solutions – not failure.

Micro-Organisms Were First

dreamstime_m_59819250

Microbes were the first forms of life on Earth. They have adapted and survived many changes over billions of years. They are too small to be seen with the naked eyes and we find these micro-organisms everywhere – from the deepest sea to the highest mountains, from the hottest springs and deserts to the coldest regions of the North and South Pole.

Microbes are essential to nature, they are in the soil and feed our plants and trees and provide nutrition for animals and life-stock to grow and thrive. They feed the Earth and remove waste materials to be decomposed and recycled into their elementary forms, they are the keepers of the planet.

Microbes are part of the human body and outnumber human cells 10 to one, that means for every human cell there are at least 10 micro-organisms present. Are these micro-organisms harmful? Having a healthy gut flora is essential to protect us from invaders and to maintain a healthy balance is protecting our immune system which mostly resides in the digestive tract.

A weakened immune system can allow harmful bacteria to establish a presence. One thing we have to acknowledge is that microbes are extremely intelligent and that they are capable to change and evolve and that they have become resistant to anti-biotics and our efforts to eliminate these life forms.

Harmful bacteria have resisted all human efforts and are causing deadly infections which our most potent drugs can not eliminate. The best defense is a strong immune system to resist infectious bacteria in the first place and to limit the use of anti-biotics.

In Case Of A Heart Attack – Insist On This

dreamstime_m_24400950

If you end up in the emergency room with a heart attack, make sure you insist on a 2 cc injection of magnesium sulfate.

In double-blind, placebo-controlled scientific study, they looked at 273 patients who were admitted to the hospital for a heart attack. The study published in one of the most prestigious medical journals revealed that after 4 weeks, the people who received the magnesium, only 7% died versus 19% who did not get the magnesium. That means magnesium cut the death rate a walloping 63%.

What was interesting is the fact that the study indicated that the people in the study were given far less than the 2 cc of magnesium recommended above.

Furthermore, the injection of magnesium decreased arrhythmias by 55%. Remember having a heart arrhythmia is one issue doctors are seriously concerned about following a heart attack.

In another study in the same medical journal approximately ten years later revealed that magnesium produced a 24% reduction in the number of deaths in one month after the heart attack.

Besides the proven benefits for victims of a heart attack, another study showedpeople who were given IV magnesium had a 76% reduction in death from a fatal blood clot.  And by the way this same study showed that aspirin made no difference.

It is in your best interest to insist that your doctor check your magnesium levels. However, don’t settle for the serum magnesium commonly ordered by most physicians. This test only evaluates the extracelluar magnesium which makes up only 1% of the magnesium in your body. You want your doctor to order the goal standard “intracellular magnesium test” which gives you the “real” picture of your level of magnesium in your body.

Your best protection is to keep your magnesium level high enough to possibly prevent having a heart attack in the first place. Considering that government studies show the average American diet only provides 40% of the magnesium that we need in a day, your best protection against a heart attack is to keep your magnesium level high enough. The best absorbed form of magnesium I’ve seen in 31 years is Magnesium Chloride Solution 200 mg/cc, and use half teaspoon once or twice a day.

Children’s Exposure to Bacteria

Children's Exposure to Bacteria

Is the pursuit of a bacteria-free world making us sick? The rising incidence of asthma and allergies in the developed world could be tied to the relatively sterile environments our children live in compared to a generation ago. Children are not exposed to harmful bacteria and consequently are given antibiotics to kill bacteria, do not receive the germ exposure required to make antibodies. More specifically, they do not develop T-helper cells, which fight foreign cellular invaders and minimize allergies.

For several years scientists have been uncovering signs that illness can result when the immune system does not get enough practice fighting bacteria and viruses. Several epidemiological and experimental studies have put this hypothesis on firm ground. Although it had been thought that the immune system required periodic infections during childhood, researchers now argue that the main problem is that the children have become squeaky clean. They suspect that children need contact not with disease-causing microbes, but with bacteria in soil and untreated water, particularly with organisms called mycobacteria, to strengthen their immune system.

The continuing rise in allergies coincides with the acceptance and use of antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers, the ultimate in excessive cleaning. Antibacterial soaps are applied to the hands and bodies in the shower or during hand washing with warm water, allowing them to easily enter the body while pores are open. There is gathering evidence that these anti-bacterial ingredients are also carcinogenic. Washing hands the old fashioned way, with regular soap and water will send the bacteria down the drain and no harmful substances enter the body’s bloodstream. Read more….

Athlete’s Foot Prevention

athlete's foot

Athlete’s foot causes scaling, flaking, and itching of the affected area. Blisters and cracked skin may also occur, leading to exposed raw tissue, pain, swelling and inflammation. The infection can spread to other parts of the body, such as the groin, but is mostly manifested between the toes, with the space between the fourth and the fifth digits is most commonly afflicted.

Athlete’s foot is a communicable disease caused by a parasitic fungus Trichophyton. As the fungus requires warmth and moisture to survive and grow, the primary method of  incubation and transmission is when people who regularly wear shoes go barefoot in a moist communal environment such as a changing room or shower, and then put on shoes.

Due to the much reduced ventilation of the skin in shoes and the tight space in which the toes are forced to be pressed together chances of infection are increased by not allowing moisture to escape. Fungus is only seen in a very small percentage of habitually (often) barefoot people, being barefoot allows full ventilation around the feet, causes them to remain dry and exposes them to sunlight, as well as developing stronger skin which will cause the fungus to be worn off before it can cause any infection.

When moving through an area that is likely to be infected it is important to remember that fungus requires for the foot to remain moist in order to grow. Since fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, keeping feet as dry as possible and avoiding sharing towels aid in  prevention. Always dry your feet thoroughly before putting on shoes and ensure that both the shoes and socks are clean and dry.

Since shoes are the primary mode of infection and incubation and since the fungus is almost non-existent in barefoot cultures the practice of keeping feet clean and dry is crucial in preventing re-infection.

Natural Probiotics and Super Foods

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Long before freezers and canning machines were available people in ancient times knew how to preserve fruits and vegetables in season for the long winters when food was scarce. These foods were often stored in caves, root cellars and sometimes even buried in the ground for years to come. The fermentation process was accomplished through lacto-fermentation, converting the sugars into lactic-acid and giving the fermented foods its characteristic sour taste. It is also a natural preservative and inhibits putrefying bacteria, preventing these foods from

rotting. Vegetables and fruits are converted into lactic acid by its many lactic acid producing bacteria. These lactobacilli are ubiquitous and are present on the surface of all living things and especially plentiful on all leaves and plants growing near the ground.

This makes some vegetables such as cabbage, cucumbers and beets ideal for the many digestive issues. Sauerkraut (sour white cabbage) or cabbage juice has a long history of providing benefits for a variety of health conditions.

This superfood is made from finely shredded cabbage and salt which preserves the cabbage for the first few days while the probiotic bacteria begin to grow. These probiotic bacteria are extremely beneficial to human digestion and are the mechanism that turns cabbage into a super nutritious food. Naturally fermented sauerkraut does not contain vinegar, the sour taste comes from the process of fermentation.

The cabbage has to be raw – naturally fermented – to contain lactic acid and the living probiotic micro-organisms that are essential for the fermentations process. Fully cooked sauerkraut or cabbage does not have the same healing benefit since most of the micro-organisms have been killed due to the exposure to high heat

Tongue Diagnosis

Tongue diagnosis is an integral part of taking a medical history in Chinese medicine. Chinese medicine practitioners believe the appearance of your tongue can reveal a lot about your health. Different areas of the tongue are believed to reflect the state of the different organ systems. If there is an unusual color, coating, and/or shape in a certain area, special attention is paid to the corresponding organ system.

In Chinese medicine, disease is explained by an imbalance of yin and yang and heat and cold in the human body. Chinese medicine believes that chronic imbalances will have a definite impact on the color and shape of the tongue body and the color and thickness of the tongue coating.

A normal tongue is described as light red in color with a thin white coating. The tongue should not be too wet and not too dry. The tongue should be without cracks or movement. It should not be too long or too short nor too stiff or too flaccid.

Tongue body color reflects the health of the internal organs. When the tongue changes from the normal pale red to very pale, dark red, purple or blue it is a clear picture of pathological changes in the body. Changes in the shape of the tongue body will indicate the severity or duration of the condition. Tongue coating can change quickly and will be a clear indication whether or not the nature of the disease is one of excess or deficiency.

Tongue diagnosis is an important part of the Chinese medical assessment, but as with any assessment method, the doctor does not rely on tongue diagnosis alone, but uses it as part to provide a complete picture of a person’s health

When the wisdom of Chinese medicine meets the technological advances of western medicine, we will all benefit.

What is Consciousness?

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Consciousness shows up in our creativity and acts of free will, or when we make a moral decision. The spectrum of consciousness extends form universal consciousness to species consciousness to individual human consciousness, to organ consciousness and may exist at the molecular and atomic levels as well.

In behavioral psychology, which is based on materialistic science, the opinion is that the mechanism of the body determines even thoughts of the mind. This point may be considered from a purely logical angle of vision. There is what is called intelligence, which is an expression of the body, a creation of the brain, or a kind of phenomenon that is projected by the material forces, but how then can we explain the appreciation of beauty, or an adoption of ethical conduct.etc.

The morality of an individual cannot be said to be the morality of the flesh, the heart or any other part of the body. Quantum physics tell us that consciousness is the ground of all being. Matter, vital energy, mental meaning are all quantum possibilities of consciousness. If we could erase the mental concept that we are separate from one another, we could collectively benefit and rise into unity consciousness.

Acid / Base Metabolism

?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Most Western diets contain too many acids relative to alkaline substances, especially animal proteins vs. vegetables products. In addition most people are under a great deal of stress and these two factors combined over time, create  long-term acid stress in the body. Our bodies have a great capacity

to buffer acids but over time these systems become chronically over-burdened. Ultimately, acids are stored in the connective tissue where a change in pH has consequences on the functioning of nearly every system in the body.

The best way to support acid-base metabolism is to change the diet and lifestyle patterns which can result in chronic acidity. The body  must compensate by either producing more bicarbonate (alkaline), for example by releasing it from the bones, or by storing these accumulated acids in the extracellular tissue for future removal.

A constantly acidic urine is a reflection of an ongoing need to eliminate excess acid. In chronic acidosis due to diet and stress the net acid load constantly outweighs the ability of the body to replenish bicarbonate. When this happens, acids are stored to prevent blood pH from becoming out of range, first in the extracellular matrix and ultimately inside the cells. This acidic extracellular matrix can result in many different health issues including: chronic pain, fatigue, osteoporosis, allergies and cancer.

Fingernails – An Indicator of Health

fingernail-1

Your fingernails can provide clues to your overall health — but do you know how to read the signs? Nail pitting are small depressions in the nails. Nail pitting is most common in people who have psoriasis — a condition characterized by scaly patches on the skin. Nail pitting can also be related to connective tissue disorders and hair loss.

With yellow nail syndrome, nails thicken and new growth slows. This results in a yellowish discoloration of the nails. Nails affected by yellow nail syndrome might lack a cuticle and detach from the nail bed. It is often a sign of respiratory disease, but can also be related to the swelling of the hands.

Nail clubbing occurs when the tips of the fingers enlarge and the nails curve around the fingertips, usually over the course of years. Nail clubbing is sometimes the result of low oxygen in the blood and could be a sign of various types of lung disease and with inflammatory bowel disease.

Spoon nails are soft nails that look scooped out. The depression usually is large enough to hold a drop of liquid. This could be a sign of iron deficiency  or a liver condition known as hemochromatosis, in which your body absorbs too much iron from the food you eat. Spoon nails can also be associated with heart disease and hypothyroidism.

Terry’s nails is associated with the tip of each nail having a dark band. Sometimes this can be attributed to aging. In other cases, it can be a sign of a serious underlying condition, such as liver disease, congestive heart failure or diabetes.

Beau’s lines are indentations that run across the nails. The indentations can appear when growth at the area under the cuticle is interrupted by injury or severe illness. Conditions associated with Beau’s lines include diabetes and peripheral vascular disease, as well as illnesses associated with a high fever’s and can also be a sign of zinc deficiency.

Onycholysis is associated with the fingernails becoming loose and separating from the nail bed. Sometimes detached nails are associated with injury or infection. In other cases nail separation is a reaction to a particular drug or consumer product, such as nail hardeners or adhesives. Thyroid disease and psoriasis — a condition characterized by scaly patches on the skin — also can cause nail separation.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve in between the tendons and the forearm muscles. This compressed nerve controls sensations to the palm side of the thumb and fingers (not the little finger), as well as impulses to some small muscles in the hand that allow the fingers and thumb to move.

There may be a sudden, sharp pain shooting through the wrist and up your arm. Symptoms usually start gradually, with frequent burning, tingling, or numbness in the palm of the hand and the fingers. The fingers may feel useless and puffed up with little or no swelling present.

The symptoms often first appear in one or both hands during the night and a person with carpal tunnel syndrome may wake up feeling the need to move their hand or wrist. As symptoms worsen the tingling may also be present during the day. A decrease in grip strength may make it difficult to form a fist, grasp small objects, or perform other manual tasks.

The current recommendation by the medical community, if symptoms persist for more than 6 months is surgery which involves severing the band of tissue around the wrist to reduce pressure on the median nerve.

Before submitting to surgery the treatment option is vitamin B-6 (75mg a day) and Zinc (50mg per day).

Migraines vs. Headaches

Headache

When people speak of headaches and migraines, they often fail to realize that the two actually represent two different conditions. Migraines represent a much more serious problem than your average tension headache. While regular headaches occur throughout most of the human population, those afflicted with migraines face a particularly painful problem.

Migraines are the most debilitating type of headache and throbbing, pulsating pain may be felt around the temples, or behind one eye or ear and make it painful to move your head. Other symptoms may include vomiting, sensitivity to light or noise, nausea and numbness or tingling on one side. About one in seven migraine sufferers experience visual disturbances that include flashes of light, zigzag lines or blind spots on or before the onset.

The pain of a migraine may last anywhere between four hours to a full week, which can make everyday tasks impossible. For those afflicted, these migraine headaches often occur between two and four times per month and may be triggered by: stress, fatigue, skipping meals,
hormonal changes, glaring or flickering lights, loud noise, weather changes, overexertion, caffeine, chocolate, red wine, beer, nicotine, aged cheeses and flavor enhancers or preservatives.

A tension headache may be felt as tightness around the head like a band and may occur across the forehead, temples, back of the head and neck or at the base of the skull – a dull, achy, pressure‑like pain. Unlike a migraine, it’s a more diffuse and less intense pain felt on both sides.

Frequency and duration are extremely variable and may last from a few minutes to a few hours or be constant. Triggers include: muscular tension, stress, depression and anxiety and may include lack of sleep, missing meals, inactivity, poor posture, eyestrain, caffeine, alcohol and overuse of pain relievers.

Pet Allergies

pet allergies

Allergies to pets with fur or feathers are common, especially among people who have other allergies or asthma. It is estimated that 15 to 30 percent of people with allergies have allergic reactions to cats, dogs, dust mites and pet dander. Some of these people with dog allergies may be allergic to all dogs or to only some breeds.

Cat allergies are about twice as common as dog allergies. Cat and dog allergens are everywhere in your home, especially in your carpets and bedding. Pet dander is even in homes never occupied by these animals because it is carried on people’s clothing. The allergens get in the air with petting, grooming or stirring the air where the allergens have settled. Once airborne, the particles can stay suspended for long periods of time.

If you must have carpet, select ones with a low pile and steam clean them frequently. Better yet, use throw rugs that can be washed in hot water.

Wear a dust mask to vacuum. Vacuum cleaners stir up allergens that have settled on carpet and make allergies worse. It is best to use a vacuum with a HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filter if possible.

Menopause

Menopause

Menopause is a normal event in a women’s life and usually happens between the ages of 45 and 55 years and signals the end of the fertile phase in a women’s life. It is the cessation of ovarian function and the gradual elimination of the menstrual cycle, the transition from potentially reproductive to a non-reproductive state.

This transition is normally not sudden or abrupt and tends to occur over a period of years – it is the consequence of biological aging.Menopause may be artificially induced by the removal of the ovaries or a hysterectomy. For some women, the accompanying signs and effects that may occur during the menopause transition years can be significant and disrupt their daily activities and sense of well-being.

When the process is normal and takes its gradual course, the adrenals and liver increase their output of female hormones – primarily estrogen – and make up the difference from the lost ovarian function. Hot flashes are a common symptom when insufficient estrogen is produced by the adrenal glands and the liver. Other symptoms may include: sweating, nervousness, anxieties, fatigue, depression, insomnia, tingling and urinary frequency and incontinence as well as gradual weight gain. In addition back pain, joint pain, muscle pain and the risk of osteoporosis may gradually develop over time.

Treatment for menopause is probably an improper term as normal events don’t need treatment but rather support on occasion to smooth the transition.

Mold and Penicillin

Moldy Bread

We have not always relied on the latest and the newest medicines as remedies for different health issues. At one time we used what was available even if it was something as primitive or disgusting as a piece of moldy bread, urine or honey.

Egyptians used honey for wound dressing and ancient Indian healers reportedly used urine as treatments with great success.

As mold is the father of modern antibiotics, we will explore the example of moldy bread and its anti-bacterial properties in general. One of the earliest examples of natural antibiotics was in ancient Serbia, where old bread was pressed upon wounds to help to prevent infection. This form of treatment actually contained an early raw form of penicillin. Mold use was also practiced in China and Greece with similar results.

With the mass production of bio-chemical antibiotics that followed, the quantities were large enough that animals could be used in experimenting with antibiotics and this later lead to the large scale manufacturing in the early 1940’s.

Over time some strains of bacteria began to adapt and became resistant to antibiotics. Today not all antibiotics work for all bacteria due to the acquired resistance.

Some of the reasons are inappropriate antibiotic use for viral infections, such as the common cold and the use of antibiotics as growth promoter in agriculture given to livestock in the absence of disease.

Practices, such as antibiotics, are effective in killing germs and disease causing bacteria, they are also effective in killing our beneficial bacteria.

Salt and Sodium

Salt and Sodium

Practically all man-made and prepared foods contain a mixture of sugar, salt and sodium. Most chefs will tell you that taste is all about balancing the palette, the balance between salt and sugar as they are the most powerful sensors of the tongue. Sugar is acidic on the PH scale, whereas salt is alkaline.

Salt and sodium are more insidious than sugar, as we never expect them to be so undermining to our health. About 40 percent of salt is sodium and 60 percent is chlorine. Sodium is a life vital element found in fruit, vegetables, meats and legumes. In addition humans have developed an addiction and add salt to their food beyond what occurs naturally in their diet.

Although a small amount of sodium (about 500 mg) is essential to normal body functions, it is estimated that the average person consumes 4000 to 5000 mg a day. It is widely understood, even by medical science that large amounts of dietary sodium result in high blood pressure (hypertension), and may lead to heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. If we eat a balanced diet, all the salt we need for a healthy body is supplied by it.

Salt is well documented for its ability to preserve everything from mummies to beef from decaying. In the early 1800’s salt was the number one preservative in the Americas and ensured an adequate supply of meats and grains for the winter season. Later canned foods were introduced loaded with salt – healthy foods do not come in cans. Salt has caused more problems than it has solved as a supplement.

What is Health?

What is Health

To be healthy is to live in harmony with the environment, to be able to think clearly, feel and act alert, to be normally in a cheerful mood, sometimes feel appropriately depressed and sometimes ecstatic, perform physical activity with adequate energy and enthusiasm and naturally incorporate physical activity.

Good health can be reached through the application of proper nutrition, by ingesting the right amount of nutrients for each individual. This concept is founded upon the recognition that no living organism lives within a perfect environment. For example a perfect environment for one individual is not only impossible, but would be intolerable for another.

One does not have to have extensive knowledge to obtain a good balanced diet. Humans have evolved and adopted to a small number of foods including grains, vegetables, fruits, fish, meat and poultry. As long as these foods are not tampered with and a variety of these natural foods are eaten, our diet with some additional supplements will be balanced.

Malnutrition and the need for supplements, resulting from excessive consumption of processed foods, especially in the form of refined carbohydrates, and exposure to toxins are major causes of nutritional imbalances and physical illnesses. The range of variation for each individual is enormous and is determined by: age, sex, physical and mental/emotional stress, diseases (whether acute or chronic), the use of pharmaceutical drugs and the general state of health.

We are all different and have different nutritional requirements. Some people become violantly ill by ingesting foods that are nutritious for others and with declining health the need for nutritional supplementation is many times greater.

Is your Bed Making you Sick?

Is your bed making you sick

Many allergy sufferers are not aware that one of the most overlooked reason is the way they sleep – the environment of their sleeping quarters. Sometimes it can be narrowed down to the materials such as goose down or feather pillows, other times it may be a form of bacteria that inhabits the pillows or mattress they are sleeping on.

There are many reasons for taking a good look at your bedding and the first thing any allergy sufferer to dust, mites, mold, mildew, fungus or other pollutants is to eliminate this one source.

If your pet is sleeping with you, if you have a damp area in your living quarters, if you have or ever seen any mold or mildew in the bathroom, or if are exposed to any type of allergy causing materials, the first step is to create a healthy sleeping space since we are spending more than one third of our lives in bed.

The easiest way is to purchase dust, mite and allergy control pillow and mattress covers. These products need to be able to fully enclose the pillows and mattresses with a zipper and to be made of waterproof material, suitable for hot water wash and dry. In this way one can be assured that your bedding is not saturated by dust, mites, mold, fungus, pet dander, bacteria or any other allergy causing agents.
