Proteins are made up of smaller molecules called amino acids – these are the building blocks needed for growth, maintenance and repair. Some can be produced by our own body, while we must get others from the foods we eat.
If you’re consuming animal products such as beef, chicken, fish, eggs, or dairy on a daily basis then you’re probably getting an adequate amount of protein. Animal protein provides all the essential amino acids in the right ratio, since animal tissues are very similar to the human kind.
For vegetarians, it is more challenging. To get enough of the essential amino acids needed it may be necessary to supplement with whey or soy protein products to obtain daily requirements.
Without protein, life as we know it would not be possible.
